February is Literacy Month at Family Day!

The theme for 2026 is ‘Making Mealtimes Family Learning Time’.

This year we are celebrating the everyday learning that happens during mealtimes — both at home and in our programs. Families are children’s first and most important teachers, and everyday moments like sharing a meal offer powerful opportunities for language, connection, and relationship-building. When conversations are relaxed and focused on togetherness rather than food, children develop communication skills, confidence, and a strong sense of belonging.

Educators play an important role as partners in this learning by creating calm, inclusive mealtime environments and extending what children experience at home. By encouraging conversation, supporting self-serving at the table, and sharing ideas and resources with families, Educators can help strengthen the connection between home and child care.

Together, families and Educators can make mealtimes meaningful learning moments that support children’s literacy and overall well-being.

Mealtimes can sometimes be stressful …

Mealtimes can feel stressful — especially when worries about how much (or what) children are eating take centre stage. This month, we’re sharing our Mealtime Conversation Cards to help shift the focus back to what matters most: connection, conversation, and time together.

Talking with your child about anything but food can actually support positive mealtime experiences — and even help with picky eating!
